Scope and Content Basement corridor, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, Strathclyde Almost 30 rooms lead from this corridor, each of which had a specific purpose. This photograph looks towards the kitchen end of the corridor. This was the domain of the cook, who would also have been responsible for her store rooms. The brown and cream tiling and tessellated floor are typical of the period. In total, there are 42 rooms in the service quarters, to accommodate numerous staff and their tasks. Every member of staff had a detailed role and minutely organised duties. For example, there are individual storerooms in the basement for knives, bicycles and boots. The basement corridor acts as the spine of the service quarters at Pollok House. Built around 1900, this part of the house was re-designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) to allow a large number of servants to carry out their duties. Pollok House is open to the public and it is in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
