Scope and Content Lady Maxwell's Room, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-west This bedroom is in the 18th-century core of the house. It was once known as the Red Bedroom, but is now decorated with hand painted Chinese wallpaper. The wallpaper came from Keir House, also a seat of the Maxwells, and is thought to date from around 1800. The rest of the room has been furnished in an 18th-century style. Most of the property is now open to the public, as it is in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), the 10th Baronet, was one of the founders of the organisation, and made arrangements to ensure the grounds and house were kept 'for the benefit of the citizens of Glasgow'. Pollok House was built between 1747 and 1752 for the Maxwell family. The house has been altered and enlarged throughout the years by generations of the family, who still have private quarters within it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
