Scope and Content Dining Room, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-west This photograph shows what was once the dining room. It became a living room after the dining room was moved to the west pavilion, built around 1905. The fine plasterwork is thought to be by Thomas Clayton (fl. 1710-60), and features vines, fruit and depictions of the hunt, seen here above the fireplace. The recess in which porcelain is displayed was once from where meals were served, and was connected to the kitchen in the 19th century via a 'dumb waiter' (a service lift). In the 18th century, textile hangings were a common form of decoration for the principal rooms of a Scottish house. However, stucco plasterwork was popular in dining rooms, as the smell of food and drink would not be absorbed. Pollok House, built 1747-52, was the seat of the Maxwell family. It is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, although private rooms for the Maxwells retain a 700-year association between Pollok and the family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
