Scope and Content Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from north This photograph shows the entrance front of the house from outside the forecourt. Both the forecourt and entrance hall were added in the late 19th century, when a number of alterations were carried out to the house and estate. The pedimented door was moved from the original entrance when these changes were made. The 19th-century alterations were carried out for Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956), who was one of the founder members of The National Trust for Scotland. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) was the architect employed to design the alterations. The architect of the original house is unknown, although William Adam was consulted by Sir John Maxwell (1686-1752) in 1737, some ten years before construction began. The Maxwell family was established at Pollok in the 13th century, and occupied at least three residences prior to the construction of Pollok House in the mid-18th century. The house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland and contains a large art collection. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
