Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of the Royal Naval Armament Depot, Charlestown, Fife In this aerial photograph, Luftwaffe intelligence officers have identified many of the buildings and their contents. According to the appended notes, the depot held a variety of munitions, such as mines and torpedoes, kept in seventeen stores (annotated 4 on the photograph) and detonators, stored in nineteen small bunkers (3). Other explosive materials were kept in underground bunkers near the river (10). Munitions could be moved using the depot's own railway and marshalling yard, and a line ran down the quay projecting into the River Forth for loading and unloading ships. The dock (6) was also linked to this railway. RNAD Crombie was established in 1912 by the Admiralty, along with a village at Crombie Point for the depot's workers. The depot is now closed. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in 1939, this photograph shows the Royal Naval Armament Depot (RNAD) at Charlestown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
