Scope and Content Achnacon Barn, Glen Coe, Highland, from north-east This photograph was taken after the barn had been converted from agricultural use, although many original features are still visible. The slit windows on the first floor allowed a limited amount of ventilation, as grain was once stored here. The larger first-floor window was once a door, which was reached via a ladder or temporary ramp. Glen Coe is a popular destination for hillwalkers and climbers, but there are some very dangerous routes. The Mountain Rescue Team is often required: This is one of three Mountain Rescue Posts in Glen Coe. Achnacon barn was first built in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is of a distinctive type of farm building, known as a 'bank barn'. This type of building is found only in the West Highlands of Scotland and in the Lake District of England. It is situated in Glen Coe, and is now used as the headquarters of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
