Scope and Content RAF aerial photograph of St Kilda, Western Isles This aerial view was taken on a day when the weather conditions were not ideal for photography. St Kilda (Hirte) has been photographed from the south-west. The white area in the lower left corner is Village Bay. The curve marked on the low-lying land is the village with cultivated fields behind it. The St Kilda group of islands, of which Hirte is the main one, is situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. In 1957, the owner of St Kilda, the Marquis of Bute, offered the islands to The National Trust for Scotland. In 1987, the islands also became a World Heritage Site, the first in Scotland. The Royal Air Force took many aerial photographs during World War II, using cameras fitted onto Spitfires and de Havilland Mosquitoes. Aerial photographs were used for many purposes, including serving as a basis for maps. This photograph was taken in 1965 and may have been taken by a pilot who was being trained in aerial photography. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
