Scope and Content Postcard view of Glenfinnan Monument, Highland, from north-east The photograph is interesting as it shows the monument prior to restoration work carried out in the 1930s. The stonework is covered with a coat of protective render, and the entrance to the tower is bricked-up. The large marble slab, seen here above the door, which records the construction and patronage of the monument has now been moved to the perimeter wall. Designed by the architect James Gillespie Graham (1776-1855), the Glenfinnan Monument was paid for by a local landowner, Alexander Macdonald of Glenalladale. As Macdonald died before completion of the monument in 1815, the inscribed marble slab also commemorates him. This photograph was taken for use as a postcard in around 1920. The Glenfinnan Monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel, where Prince Charles Edward Stuart gathered the clans before the Battle of Culloden in 1745. It is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
