Scope and Content Toll-house, Maryburgh, Highland, from south This view from the south shows the toll-house at the northern end of the bridge, with the wing-wall parapet in the foreground. The lower level of the toll-house was used for collecting the tolls. Note that the level of the road was raised to make the bridge more suitable for motor traffic before its replacement in the 1960s. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were abolished in the 1880s, but most toll-houses remained inhabited, often by roadmen and their families. By the 1960s the smaller ones were being declared unfit, but many of the larger ones are still inhabited, like this one. This toll-house was built to collect tolls from users of Conon Bridge, over the River Conon, built to designs by Thomas Telford as part of the Government-funded programme which he oversaw in the early 19th century. This is one of only two of Telford's two-storeyed toll-houses which survive in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
