Scope and Content Glasgow Corporation tramcar in Trongate, Glasgow This view from the west, taken in 1960, shows a tramcar on the No 26 service from Burnside to Dalmuir West. The car is one of a type introduced in 1927, made by several manufacturers. All had 'Maximum Traction' bogies, built by the Kilmarnock Engineering Co, and were known as 'Kilmarnock Bogies'. The No 26 service ran for many years from Burnside to Dalmuir West (or various short workings). It was Glasgow's second last tram route, cut back at its east end to Dalmarnock in 1961, and withdrawn altogether at the beginning of June 1962, shortly after this photograph was taken. Glasgow Corporation owned its street tramways from 1870, but the horse-tram services were provided by a private company until 1894. The Corporation electrified its tramways between 1894 and 1902, and subsequently extended services to neighbouring settlements, including Clydebank and Dalmuir. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
