Scope and Content Glasgow Corporation tramcar in Trongate, Glasgow This view from the west, taken on 4 September 1962, shows a tramcar operating on a special service from Anderston Cross to Auchenshuggle, run to mark the end of tram services in the city. The car is one of a series introduced in 1937, known as 'Coronation' cars. The No 9 service ran for many years from Dalmuir West to Auchenshuggle, near Tollcross. It was Glasgow's last tram route, cut back at its west end to Yoker in June 1962, and withdrawn altogether at the beginning of September in that year. Glasgow Corporation owned its street tramways from 1870, but the horse-tram services were provided by a private company until 1894. The Corporation electrified its tramways between 1894 and 1902, and subsequently extended services to neighbouring settlements, including Clydebank and Dalmuir. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
