Scope and Content Pier, Balintraid, Highland This view from the north-west, taken on 13 May 1974, shows the pier from the landward end, looking towards the North and South Sutors, the headlands which flank the entrance to the Cromarty Firth from the Moray Firth. The quality of the masonry, with large blocks closely jointed, is obvious. This pier is sited where the relatively deep waters of the Cromarty Firth shallow significantly, and was presumably designed to handle trade from the area to the north and east, a notable grain-growing area. A warehouse was built at the landward end of the pier. Since 1974 parts of the pier have decayed. This pier was built in 1817 to designs by Thomas Telford, as part of a government-funded scheme to improve transport in the Highlands and Islands. It is a well-constructed breakwater pier, designed to protect vessels moored to it from the prevailing south-westerly winds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
