Scope and Content Victoria Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This view from the south, taken in 1981, shows two coasters berthed on the south-east side of the harbour, the puffer 'Spartan' and the larger coaster 'Dawnlight I'. The former was built in 1942 in Kirkintilloch as a 'Victualling Inshore Craft' (VIC). It was converted from steam to diesel propulsion in 1962. Both of these vessels were owned by the Glenlight Shipping Co Ltd, who sold the 'Spartan' to the West of Scotland Boat Museum Association for £1 in about 1985. The vessel is now preserved in the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine. The Victoria Harbour in Greenock was constructed in 1846-50 to designs by Joseph Locke, probably to take advantage of the recently-opened Glasgow & Greenock Railway, which Locke was also involved in designing. For many years it was used for berthing tugs, puffers and other small craft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
