Scope and Content Queen's Dock, Glasgow This view from the west, taken from the Kelvinhaugh ferry on 28 January 1967, shows the dock entrance in the centre, with the central pier in the background. On the right is the tower from which vessels using the dock were controlled, and on the left the hydraulic pumping station built in 1878. The dock entrance was originally spanned by a hydraulically-operated swing bridge, carrying both road and rail traffic. This was removed in the 1950s. The dock was filled in during the 1970s and is now the site of the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre, of an hotel, and of a heliport. Queen's Dock was built between 1872 and 1880 by the Clyde Navigation Trust, to cope with the increasing size and number of vessels using Glasgow Harbour. It had two large basins. Traffic declined during the 1960s, and the dock was closed at the end of 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
