Scope and Content Town Pier, North Queensferry, Fife This view from the north-north-east shows the Town Pier at North Queensferry, as rebuilt in 1812. The line of poles to the left indicates the position of the pier when the pier is submerged. The copestones of the low wall on the right of the pier are dovetailed together to resist wave action. This pier was little used after car ferries were introduced on the ferry in the early 1930s. These were withdrawn in 1964, when the Forth Road Bridge, in the background in this view, was opened. In recent years this pier has been used by boats from the south with visitors to the Sea Life Centre, an aquarium. The Queen's Ferry, named after Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm Canmore, is a natural point at which the Forth estuary can be crossed. In 1812 the ferry piers at both ends were rebuilt, and equipped with small lighthouses. Alternative landing places were provided to take account of tides and winds.
