Scope and Content Train at Springfield Railway Yard, Wallace Street, Falkirk This view, taken from the south-west on 6 August 1971, shows a diesel-electric locomotive shunting coaches to form a Scottish Railway Preservation Society excursion train to Mallaig. The transit shed is out of sight to the left. The locomotive was built by the North British Locomotive Co Ltd in the late 1950s. The Scottish Railway Preservation Society was founded in 1962. It moved to Bo'ness in about 1980, where it operates the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway. Springfield Goods Station, and the adjacent sawmills have been demolished and the sites redeveloped. This goods station and the associated yard was built by the North British Railway in about 1870, and later extended by the construction of a trans-shipment shed for the iron castings made by the many local foundries. In about 1965 this shed became the depot of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
