Scope and Content Train at Inverness Station, Station Square, Inverness, Highland This view from the north-north-east shows the first of a series of special excursions from Inverness to Forres, run to mark the centenary of the formation of The Highland Railway. The excursions were hauled by the only surviving ex-Highland Railway locomotive, a 'Jones Goods' 4-6-0 of 1894. The two coaches used for the excursion were ex-Caledonian Railway corridor stock. Both locomotive and coaches were restored to work special excursions in 1959. The locomotive is now in the Glasgow Transport Museum, and the coaches are with the Scottish Railway Preservation Society at Bo'ness. This station was opened in 1855 by the Inverness & Nairn Railway, and rebuilt and extended on a number of occasions, most recently in the early 1960s. It has separate sets of platforms for services to the south and east (on the north-west side of the station) and to the north (on the south-east side). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
