Scope and Content Locomotive at Fairfield Shipyard & Engine Works, No 1048 Govan Road, Glasgow This shows the electric locomotive latterly used to haul trains along the tram track from the east. This locomotive was built in 1940 by the English Electric Co Ltd. It was originally fitted with a bow collector, but after about 1960, when trolley buses replaced trams, twin trolleys were installed as seen here. This photograph was taken in 1967, when members of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society were examining it with a view to its preservation. It is now in the Society's collection at Bo'ness, having been presented by Fairfield (Govan) Ltd in 1967. This shipbuilding yard was founded in 1863 by Randolph & Elder, to build hulls for the marine engines made in their Tradeston works. After 1903 materials brought to Govan goods yard were ferried along Govan Road to the yard along the Glasgow Corporation tram tracks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
