Scope and Content Station, Station Road, Garelochhead, Argyll & Bute This shows the station in 1985 from the north. The platform is built of mass concrete, an early use of this material. The building has a brick base, and wooden superstructure, with the panels between windows and doors faced with imported wooden shingles with scalloped edges. In 1985 this building was one of the least altered stations on the line, and was one of a number listed as being of special architectural or historical importance during a thematic relisting of Scottish railway stations carried out in 1985-6. It is still in use, though no longer staffed. This station was opened in 1884 by the West Highland Railway, as part of its route from Craigendoran and Fort William. It is one of two standard designs built by the company, both of which are in the 'Swiss Chalet' style. This type has an island platform. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
