Scope and Content Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, Harris, Western Isles, from west Amhuinnsuidhe Castle was built in 1864-7 for the 7th Earl of Dunmore and designed by David Bryce (1803-76). The castle, built in Scots Baronial style, is to the far right in this view. On the left is a terrace of cart sheds and dwelling houses. These buildings are two-storeyed with crowstepped gables. David Bryce was a successful Victorian architect, famous for his buildings in the Scots Baronial style. He was very experienced in the layout of country houses, having gained a lot of experience whilst in partnership with the Edinburgh architect William Burn (1789-1870). Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Amhuinnsuidhe is situated on the west coast of Harris, towards the north end of the island. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
