Scope and Content Sanday footbridge and shrine, Canna, Highland, from east This wooden footbridge, which links the islands of Canna and Sanday, spans the tidal channel at the western end of Canna Harbour. The footbridge was constructed in 1905 to enable children from Canna to attend school on Sanday. Built by a Mr Fletcher from Tobermory, the bridge cost £130, and was paid by proprietors and tenants on the islands. At the end of the footbridge on Sanday there is a modern shrine. Canna has had a long association with Christianity, as it is thought St Columba visited the island during his time in Scotland between 563 and 597AD. An island named 'Hinba'or 'Himba' is mentioned in historical records, and this may be the pre-Norse name for Canna. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
