Scope and Content The Bothy and the Laird's House, Canna, Highland, from the south-west The long white house to the far right, which faces over Canna Harbour, is known as The Bothy and is thought to have been built 1781-87 when Hector MacNeill leased a holding on Canna from the guardians of the owner, John MacDonald of Clanranald. Originally The Bothy was known as Coroghon House, and it had another storey which was removed in the 1860s. In the trees behind The Bothy the roof of Canna House is visible. It was built in the 1860s by Hector MacNeill's grandson, Donald MacNeill. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
