Scope and Content Church of Scotland and manse, Leverburgh, Harris, Western Isles, from south-east In the background is the Church of Scotland manse which is a single-storeyed building with an attic. It is three bays wide with a slated roof and a projecting entrance porch in the central bay. To the left is the Church of Scotland which is three bays wide with a bell tower. Both the church and manse probably date from the early 20th century. In 1918 Lord Leverhulme, William Hesketh Lever (1851-1925), the English soapmaker who had founded the town of Port Sunlight, bought Lewis from Colonel Duncan Matheson, and in 1920 he also bought Harris. As the owner of 570,000 acres he was the largest landowner in Britain at the time. Lord Leverhulme wished to turn Leverburgh into a commercial fishery. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Leverburgh, once known as Obbe, is at the south-west tip of Harris. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
