Scope and Content Houses 4-6, St Kilda, Western Isles, from east These houses, which date to 1860, face onto the street, and are of a style which had not been seen before in St Kilda. They are single-storeyed and were built from imported stone and cement, by masons from Skye. When the houses were first built the roofs were covered with zinc sheets, which was unsuited to the local weather conditions. Later, tarred felt was used for the roofs. Inside the houses there were three rooms: a bedroom, a kitchen, and another room. The large rooms each had a fireplace and a chimney. The more traditional-style houses built in the village in the 1830s, seen between the 'new' houses, were retained as byres and barns. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
