Scope and Content Fordell's Lodging, Nos 16-18 Church Street, Inverkeithing, Fife, from north-north-east This view from the north-north-east, taken in 1979, shows the scale of the building, built of the local whinstone, with sandstone dressings. Its general character is typical of the period, the corbelled turret giving it both presence in the street, and an indication of the status of the owner. This is the only survivor of the large mansions in the burgh, but it has a number of other reminders of a rich and varied past, including a 14th-century church tower, the much altered guest house of a Franciscan Friary, an 18th-century Town House, and an exceptionally fine market cross. This building was constructed in about 1670 as the town house of Sir John Henderson of Fordell. At that time the royal burgh of Inverkeithing, established in the 12th century, was a prosperous place, with several large mansions. It was originally harled, and the harling has been replaced since 1979. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
