Scope and Content Parish Church, No 3 Kirk Brae, Ceres, Fife, from north-west This view from the north-west, taken in 1979, shows the building, with its rectangular windows, already a little old-fashioned by 1805, though the tower was quite up-to date. The little building in front of the church is the 16th-century Lindsay Vault, which was probably attached to the body of the earlier church. The church was designed by Alexander Leslie. The clock and steeple were added in 1851 by Hugh Birrell. The building replaced an earlier building, and there is a 15th-century effigy of a knight in the vestibule. The church retains its original box pews, some of which convert into Communion pews. Ceres village is the focal point for a rich agricultural area, and was created a burgh of barony in 1620. In the late 18th century it became a centre of the linen-weaving industry, and a bleachfield was established nearby to finish the cloth. This church was built in 1805-6, when the linen trade was flourishing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
