Scope and Content High Street, Anstruther Wester, Fife, from east This view from the east, taken in 1979, shows several of the houses in this section of High Street, with the pantiled roofs and harled walls typical of the burghs of the East Neuk of Fife. The coloured washes on the walls are of the 1960s or later. The spire on the right is that of the former parish church, now halls. Anstruther Wester became a burgh of barony in 1541, 31 years before Anstruther Easter, but the latter proved more successful, and the former is now effectively a suburb of the latter, though it still retains, as here, something of the flavour of its mercantile past. These buildings line the route from the former harbour of Anstruther Wester to the main part of the town. They are mainly of mid-18th-century date, though several incorporate earlier masonry. The harbour is now a mere relic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
