Scope and Content General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh, from east-south-east This view from the east-south-east, taken in 1979, shows the main frontage of the building to Princes Street. It forms the centrepiece of the view along the North Bridge. The cupola on the left contains a wind-direction gauge, and that on the right a clock. These were made by Vuillamy of London, and installed in 1790. The building has a central domed hall surrounded by a quadrangle of offices. The rooms and corridors are vaulted as a precaution against fire. It was for many years the only repository for Scotland's national archives, but there are now two other centres, in Charlotte Square and in South Gyle. This building was constructed to designs by Robert Adam to house the records (archives) of Scotland. It was begun in 1774, and was completed by 1803, apart from an intended north range. This was added in 1822-34 by Robert Reid. The front area wall was set back in 1851 and again in 1890-1. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
