Scope and Content Parish Church, Whittingehame, East Lothian, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the entrance front of the building, with its pinnacled tower. The pinnacles are unusually tall and slender. The red sandstone is typical of East Lothian. Note that although the tower is built of dressed stone the body of the church is built of rubble. This church is in the 'Heritors' Gothic' style in favour in Scotland from about 1810 until about 1840. Most of the buildings constructed on this plan were rectangular, often with galleries, and this T-plan example is therefore unusual. Whittingehame is a village established in about 1840 by James Balfour, who bought the Whittingehame estate in 1817. He built a large new house in 1817, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, and extended it in 1827. He also rebuilt the parish church in 1820, probably to designs by Barclay & Lamb.
