Scope and Content Old Parish Church, Stenton, East Lothian, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the tower which is part of the 16th-century parish church which was replaced in 1829 by the present church. The building on the left is probably of 18th-century date, and probably originally housed agricultural workers. It is typical of East Lothian vernacular building. The parish has suffered from depopulation as a result of the mechanisation of farming, and the village houses are now largely homes for commuters to Edinburgh. Stenton is a small village today, but was once an important focal point for a large and prosperous grain-growing community. It has retained its rural character with little change.
