Scope and Content Tower of Old Parish Church, Stenton, East Lothian, from south-south-west This view from the south-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the tower which is part of the 16th-century parish church which was replaced in 1829 by the present church. The tower was converted into a dovecot, and probably survives for that reason. As can be seen, pigeons were still using it for nesting in 1979. This view also shows part of the churchyard. The elaboration of some of the monuments is clear evidence of the prosperity of the parish in the 17th and 18th centuries. The parish has suffered from depopulation as a result of the mechanisation of farming. Stenton is a small village today, but was once an important focal point for a large and prosperous grain-growing community. It has retained its rural character with little change.
