Scope and Content Bowmore village, Islay, Argyll & Bute, from north This view from the north, taken in 1979, shows the main street from the north, with the parish church of Kilarrow at the top of the street. This, the only intact round church in Scotland, was built in 1767 to designs supplied by the laird. The wider section of the street was the marketplace. The regularity of the plan of Bowmore is not reflected in the uniformity of the buildings. Port Charlotte (1828) and Port Ellen (1821) both have more uniform housing, but have less interesting plans. Bowmore is an outstanding example of a planned village, with the main street running up from the pier to the unique round parish church of Kilarrow, closing the vista. The village was laid out in 1767-8 by Daniel Campbell, a Glasgow merchant who had bought the island. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
