Scope and Content Burghead Harbour, Moray, from west This view from the west, taken in 1979, shows the east side of the harbour, with two of the early 19th-century grain warehouses in the left background. In the foreground is the motor fishing vessel 'Home Cliffe' registered in Wick. This is typical of the wooden seine-net boats built after the World War II. The grain trade had long gone by 1979, but the warehouses on the east side of the basin, as seen here, were still standing, one converted into a yacht club. Further improvements were made to the harbour entrance in about 1980. It is still used as a fishing harbour. Burghead Harbour was built in 1807-10, to designs by Thomas Telford, and improved in 1832, 1835 and 1881-7. It was initially designed for trade, and especially for the shipping of grain grown in the adjacent Laigh of Moray. The 1881-7 improvements were carried out for the fishing industry.
