Scope and Content Ferry at slipway of Pier, Largs, North Ayrshire, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1979, shows the MV 'Isle of Cumbrae' waiting to load cars for Cumbrae at the 1971-2 ferry ramp. This roll-on roll-off vessel was built in 1977 for the Cumbrae service. To the left is the end of the 1822 pier. The car ferry service to Cumbrae Slip replaced a passenger ferry service from Wemyss Bay to Millport, which was supplemented in summer by small ferries from Largs to Millport. Since 1972 a series of ever-larger vessels has been used on the car ferry. Largs Pier was built in 1822, on an L-plan, replacing an earlier quay. The pier provided a deep-water berth for steamers on the outer face, and the inner faces were used by smaller craft. In 1971-2 a concrete ferry ramp was built in the south-east corner of the pier, for use by a car ferry to a similar slip opposite, on Cumbrae. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
