Scope and Content Piermaster's House, South Pier, Oban, Argyll & Bute, from west-south-west This view from the west-south-west, taken in 1979, shows the pier building to the right, and the MV 'Morvern' moored at the pier. This vessel is one of a class of eight small car ferries built in the 1970s for Caledonian-Macbrayne. The pile of lobster pots and the fishing nets shows that the pier was also used by fishing boats. This pier was used by puffers until the 1960s. The use of puffers for handling west Highland trade declined sharply when vehicular ferries, like this one, were introduced in the early 1960s. The last puffer in the area was using the North Pier in 1979, and has since been withdrawn. The South Pier was constructed in 1820 by Campbell of Sonachan for use by the steamers which were at that time taking over the passenger trade of the western Highlands and Islands. It was later superseded by the North Pier and Railway Quay, but remains in use by smaller vessels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
