Scope and Content Gravestone of Janet Ritchie and family, St Martins Parish Church, St Martins, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features the story of Adam and Eve. The two figures stand on each side of the Tree of Knowledge, around which the serpent is coiled ready to tempt Eve with the apple. The inner border of this arched stone is carved with crimped and twisted decoration. The Biblical story of Adam and Eve represents the fall of man, and the need to be obedient to God. The story also suggests the coming of Christ (sometimes called the 'second Adam') and redemption. Adam and Eve scenes with their setting of the Garden of Eden, were often chosen for the decoration of the gravestones of gardeners. This gravestone commemorates Janet Ritchie, who died at the age of 20, and her young family. It was commissioned by her husband, James Mitchell, in 1750. Latin inscriptions within book-shaped panels at the top of the stone translate as: 'For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
