Scope and Content Gravestone of Jeen and William Ramsay, Panbride, Panbride Parish Church, Panbride, Angus This gravestone features, within its arched top, a carving of a winged soul, emblem of the spirit ascending to Heaven. Below the soul is a panel of inscriptions and a shield shape containing a flaming heart between initials and carvings of a loom, shuttle, shuttlecock (a device for keeping the warp threads apart). The figures of a man and woman holding flowers flank the main panel, and below them is a row of death emblems, including a skull in profile. Many gravestones, like this example, record interesting contemporary costume details. The figures on this stone are intricately carved, and wear fashionable clothes. The man wears a long flaring coat, stockings, shoes and a wig. The woman wears a long-bodiced dress (a shape created by boned 'stays' or corsets) with a checked skirt and heeled shoes. The figures may be the parents of the deceased, or the children themselves, who were often dressed in adult clothes in this period. This gravestone commemorates Jeen and William Ramsay, who died in 1752. The inscription reads: 'Erected by James Ramsay &/Margaret Peeter his spouse/in newtown of Panmoor in/memory of their deceased child/ren viz; Jeen Ramsay who/died 17th March 1752 in the 5th/year of her age, & Wiliam who died 1752 in the 3 year of his/age'.
