Scope and Content Aerial view of Tay Works, No 2, Lochee Road, Dundee Towards the middle of the aerial view a long Classical frontage can be seen. This is the Tay Works in Lochee Road. The Gilroys built extensions in 1850-1, and again in the 1860s, creating one of the biggest jute mills in Dundee, and perhaps the longest textile mill in Britain. The mills were built in a Classical style, and had fireproof iron frames. To the right, on the curve of Lochee Road, is the Dudhope Works. This single-storeyed, steel-framed factory was built in 1952. The Dudhope Works originally began in 1837 and was sited in Douglas Street. The spinning and manufacture of jute became one of the main industries in Dundee in the 19th century. 'Juteopolis' was the centre of the jute trade in Britain, and for many decades was the world leader in jute production, until it was overtaken by India. By the 1990s there were only four working jute mills left in Dundee. The Tay Works in Lochee Road, Dundee, began as a business in 1849 when the Gilroy Brothers bought several mills from a bankrupt flax spinner. The works was extended further with the building of other mills and factories between 1851 and 1881. By 1877 Gilroy Sons & Co was the second biggest jute manufacturer in the world. By the 1970s the jute industry had declined, and in 1986 much of the Tay Works was converted into student residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
