Scope and Content Old Bridge, Stirling This shows the bridge from the south-west. The almost semicircular arches and triangular cutwaters are features of pre-18th-century bridges. Note the stone reinforcement round the bases of the piers, evidence of strengthening works carried out in 1912-20 by the Ministry of Works. This bridge carried main road traffic until the opening of the nearby New Bridge in 1831. It is now a footbridge, and is a property in care, looked after by Historic Scotland on behalf of Scottish Ministers. This masonry arch bridge was built in the 15th or 16th century, as the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, and replaced a succession of timber bridges. Its construction is typical of the period, though the arches are unusually large. The gradient of the approaches on either side were eased in about 1800. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
