Scope and Content Meadowside Granaries, Meadowside Quay, Glasgow This shows the granaries from the west, looking from Holmfauld Road, with ships discharging grain, using pneumatic elevators. The tallest section, nearest to the camera, was the last to be built, in the early 1960s. The low building to the left of this is the Merklands Lairage, used for handling cattle from Ireland. The granaries remained in use until the late 1970s when direct imports of grain into Glasgow ceased. They then lay derelict until 2002, when demolition began, with a view to the construction of a major mixed-use development on this and adjacent sites. These granaries were built in stages from 1911-13 by the Clyde Navigation Trust to handle imports of both wheat for flour milling and maize and barley for whisky distilling. The first section could handle both bagged and bulk grain, and the post-World War II additions were for bulk grain only. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
