Scope and Content Fulwood Foundry, Burnbank Road, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire This shows the exterior of the moulding shop from the north-north-east, with the three cupolas which serve it. All are modern, with water-cooled spark arresters. The small one can be seen to the left of the elevator used to raise materials to the charging platform. There are heaps of limestone and coke in front of the cupolas. In 1971 the foundry was making a range of medium-sized castings, including small ingot moulds and bottom plates, spouts for launders for open-hearth furnaces, supports for roof bricks in soaking pits and moulds for pig-casting machines. The foundry closed in 1978, and has been demolished. This foundry was established in 1856, as the Hamilton Foundry, in Burnbank Road, Hamilton, by a Mr Frew. The company eventually became part of Colvilles Ltd, and in 1971 belonged to the British Steel Corporation. This is the smaller of its two foundries, the larger being in New Stevenston.
