Description Ex-Scotland View of Anglo-Saxon bracelet from Elton.

Collection Papers of Brian Hope-Taylor, archaeologist, Cambridge, England

Catalogue Number E 37058 CN

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 776058

Scope and Content Anglo-Saxon bracelet, Elton, Peterborough This bronze Anglo-Saxon bracelet dates to the 6th or 7th century. It would have originally been a bright gold colour but due to the copper content it has turned green over time. It was cast in one piece and has punched decoration at either end. The nature of the bracelet's discovery is unclear but these types of bracelets are normally discovered in Anglo-Saxon burials. Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are the best source of evidence on Anglo-Saxon life, as they often contain a wealth of grave goods. This artefact is from the Brian Hope-Taylor collection. Hope-Taylor (1923-2001) was a remarkable archaeologist who did much to raise the standards of excavation and archaeological illustration in Britain. He pioneered excavation techniques on timber buildings and was especially noted for his work on Anglo-Saxon and early medieval sites in Scotland and England. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
