Scope and Content Main Chapel, Mortonhall Crematorium, No 30B Howdenhall Road, Edinburgh This shows the Main Chapel with its rows of pine benches with slots in their tops for storing service books. These pews are angled towards a 'sanctuary' area which is lit by a pyramidal roof above. A simple wooden cross and climbing plant emphasise the area around the catafalque (plinth for a coffin) as a focus for the service. Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) is famous for his design for Coventry Cathedral (built 1951, after the original building was destroyed by wartime bombing). This building shares similar lighting effects and angular decorative features with Mortonhall Crematorium, and both buildings provide simply furnished, dignified space for services. Mortonhall Crematorium was designed in 1962 for the Corporation of the City of Edinburgh. It was built 1964-7 to designs by architects Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson, in association with City Architect A Steele. The asymmetrical design includes a main chapel, small chapel, remembrance chapel, waiting room, crematorium and service block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
