Scope and Content Photographic copy of elevation to Wellington Place, Central Halls, Nos 2-20 Earl Grey Street, Edinburgh This shows an ink and wash drawing of the side of the building, with its striking domed corner tower and top-floor windows with ornate gables breaking the line at the wall-head. These are flanked by pierced semicircular balustrades. An arch on the ground floor between the shop windows features a broken pediment and iron gates. The Wesleyan Methodist Mission Hall was opened in 1901 by the Reverend George Jackson, founder and first superintendent of the church. The interior space features a curved and ribbed ceiling on Ionic columns, lit by Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The Wesleyan Methodist Mission Halls (later known as Central Halls) were built 1899-1901 to designs by architects Dunn & Findlay, and the gallery was partitioned in 1936 by architects Maclennan & Cunningham. The building occupies a corner site, and marks this with a large copper-domed circular tower. A row of ten shops was originally intended to occupy the ground floor, with halls and offices on the other two storeys, all executed in the Beaux Arts style in pink sandstone.
