Scope and Content Stables, Prestonfield House, No 71A Priestfield Road, Edinburgh This shows the arched and pedimented three-bay entrance front to the circular stables block. The walls are built of cream-coloured sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, a string course and include sculptured decorative panels above the arched entrance. The windows have all been blocked. The round stables are now used as a function suite for the hotel, with a canopy over the central open courtyard to create a large space for entertainments. The unusual design of this round stable block can be compared to the famous 'Round Square' at Gordonstoun, which was built in the late 17th century. Prestonfield House was rebuilt for Sir James Dick in 1687 by architect Sir William Bruce (c.1630-1710) after being burnt down during a student riot in 1681. A single-storeyed extension was added in c.1830, and in 1890 architects MacGibbon & Ross added a bathroom extension. Within the grounds is an unusual round stable block built in 1816 to designs by James Gillespie Graham (1777-1855). The house has been run as a hotel since 1959.
