Scope and Content Bonnington Mills Granary, Newhaven Road, Edinburgh This shows the mills from the north-west, looking across an area of allotments. The building with the rounded corrugated iron roof is the milling block, and the miller's house is to its left. The chimney in the centre belongs to the Bonnington Bridge Paper Mills. This mill was probably originally an oatmeal and animal provender mill, but latterly it seems to have been making provender only. The three pairs of stones were arranged in a line and driven by bevel gearing, individual pairs having cast iron framing, the most modern type of stone-milling apparatus. This water-powered complex dated in part from the 18th century, but had been much altered, and new machinery had been installed, probably in the early 20th century, driven by a low-breast paddle wheel 1.83m by 3.35m. It was disused in 1970, but still intact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
