Scope and Content Mechan & Sons (Scotstoun Iron Works), Nos 1037-71 South Street, Glasgow This shows the main entrances to the works, both rail-served from the freight tramway which paralleled the high-level passenger line along the north bank of the River Clyde, opened in 1896. Note the narrow doors on the right, used by the workmen when they were 'clocking in' and out. Mechans were casualties of the decline of traditional shipbuilding on the Clyde and elsewhere, when the world's trade was carried in many small- and medium-sized vessels, each requiring auxiliary equipment. By 1970 the works was the headquarters of John Young & Co (Kelvinhaugh) Ltd, heavy hauliers. This works was founded in about 1900 by Mechan & Sons, engineers and contractors. The firm executed a wide variety of work, including steel lifeboats and such marine auxiliaries as engine room telegraphs. They also made steel structures. In the mid-1950s they employed about 1,000 men. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
