Scope and Content Medieval jug, More, Shropshire This almost complete medieval jug was discovered at More. Its handle is missing but it still has some traces of green glaze on its body. This pot was handmade and then finished on a wheel. It is not very well made and may have been damaged while it was being fired in the kiln. A motte-and-bailey castle is a mound (motte) which is constructed from earth dug from a surrounding ditch. The mound was crowned with a timber tower and surrounding palisade or fence. Next to the motte was the bailey or castle courtyard, where outbuildings and servants quarters were located. These castles spread across England after the Norman Conquest in 1066. More is a motte-and-bailey castle in Shropshire, England, which had been erected over an earlier defensive bank and ditch, or ringwork, of post-Norman Conquest date (1066). It was examined in 1959 by Brian Hope-Taylor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
