Scope and Content West Mill, Dean Path, Dean Village, Edinburgh This shows the mills from the south-east, with the milling block in the centre and the granary on the right. The scale and sophistication of the building is evident. The blind circular openings mark the division between the two mirror-image mills. The mills were converted into the Dean Distillery, a Lowland Malt distillery, in 1881 by James Johnstone of Glenpatrick Distillery, Elderslie. This conversion also involved a mill on the opposite bank of the river. This distillery closed in 1922. The West Mills were converted into flats in the mid-1970s. This large and handsome complex was built in 1805-6 for the stone grinding of flour, using waterwheels driven by the Water of Leith. There were two mirror-image mills facing the river, with a granary block to the rear. The mills were put out of business by the development of roller milling in the late 1970s.
