Scope and Content Anglo-Saxon grave goods, Yeavering, Northumberland This is some of the metalwork recovered from the various Anglo-Saxon graves excavated at Yeavering. At the top of the image two iron knifes are visible and on the left, 'swivel catches' for a purse. Below are hook-shaped objects and a buckle. Such objects are typically found in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries from the 6th-7th centuries. Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are the best source of evidence on Anglo-Saxon life, as they often contain a wealth of grave goods. These remains also provide information on what was expected in the afterlife, as valued personal possessions appear to have been indicators of social hierarchies or groups within Anglo-Saxon society. Yeavering was the site of an Anglo-Saxon royal palace associated with the kings of Northumbria. Excavations undertaken by Brian Hope-Taylor between 1953 and 1962 revealed the ground plans of an extraordinary array of timber buildings, which had lain undisturbed since the site was abandoned. The palace entered the historical record in the 7th century when it was mentioned by the monk Bede in his 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People', referring to it as 'Ad Gefrin'.
